How to Pack Your Care Package for Faster Processing

Everyone loves receiving a balikbayan box — but not everyone thinks about how to pack it right. You might be surprised to know that how you pack your box can be the difference between it arriving smoothly or being delayed at customs, damaged in transit, or flagged for inspection.
Packing isn't just about maximizing space — it's about being smart, respectful of customs rules, and thoughtful toward the person receiving the box.
Let's start with the basics. Use a proper box. We always recommend Bunnings or AusPost cartons — they're sturdy and predictable in size. Avoid reused appliance boxes or oddly shaped cartons. Customs officers and couriers alike appreciate consistency. It speeds up handling and protects your items better.
Now, protect what's inside. Bubble wrap is your best friend — especially for fragile items or anything in a glass container. Don't just toss in jars or electronics. Wrap them tightly and tape them in place so they don't shift during transit. If you're including snacks, seal them in ziplock bags to contain any possible mess if something bursts. It happens more than you'd expect.
One underrated step? Make a content list. Just a simple printed sheet taped inside the box lid or folded on top. It should list what's inside and roughly how many of each. It helps customs officers assess the box quickly and reduces the risk of them opening it unnecessarily.
It's also a good idea to group similar items together. Toiletries in one bag, snacks in another, clothes folded and packed tightly. If customs does inspect the box, it's easier for them to verify contents and repack things without disrupting the entire box.
Also: don't overpack. A bursting box is more likely to get damaged — and it's harder to reseal. Leave a bit of breathing room and reinforce all seams with strong packing tape. Add tape vertically and horizontally across the bottom and top — think of it like gift-wrapping with armor.
Label your box clearly with the recipient's name, phone number, and address — in permanent marker, not ballpoint pen. Stick a printed label too, if possible. Double visibility helps avoid mix-ups.
And lastly, take a photo of the packed box before sealing. It gives you peace of mind and can be helpful in case something goes missing or arrives opened.
A care package should feel like a gift, not a puzzle or a burden. When you pack thoughtfully, you're not just sending stuff — you're sending comfort, joy, and effort. And that's what makes balikbayan boxes so powerful.
Pack with intention, and the box will speak for itself.
