Understanding Customs. What You Can and Can't Send.

Customs inspection of balikbayan boxes

There's nothing more heartbreaking than packing a balikbayan box full of love, only to have it held up — or worse, partially confiscated — at customs. It happens more often than you'd think, and most of the time, it's not because someone tried to break the law. It's just a matter of not knowing the rules.

Let's get this straight, not everything you can pack should be sent. The Philippine Bureau of Customs has a clear list of what's allowed, what's restricted, and what's absolutely prohibited. And if you want your package to reach your family smoothly and on time, it pays to know the difference.

The basics are easy. Clothes? Yes — especially new ones, ideally still with tags. Snacks? Yes — as long as they're sealed and non-perishable. Toiletries? Also yes — but keep the liquids under control. A few bars of soap or sealed lotion bottles under 100ml? No problem. Full-size shampoo bottles? Maybe not. Better to double-wrap those and check if they meet the volume rules.

Now, here's where it gets tricky.

Perfumes, alcohol, vapes, and anything flammable are a hard no. Same with prescription medications if they're not accompanied by a valid doctor's note. And electronics? They're allowed — but if you're sending a brand-new tablet, phone, or laptop, be ready to provide receipts or proof of ownership. Otherwise, it could be flagged for taxation or even held at customs.

One of the most misunderstood restrictions? Used personal items — especially underwear or shoes. Even if you're just trying to recycle something gently used, customs has very little tolerance for secondhand clothing in balikbayan boxes. It's seen as a health and sanitation concern, and it could lead to penalties or destruction of your box contents.

And here's a pro tip: always include a list of what's inside the box. It doesn't have to be fancy — just something clear and honest. It helps if customs wants to verify the contents without opening every corner. And if something is fragile or valuable, label it as such — or better yet, take a photo of your packed box before sealing it.

At the end of the day, customs isn't out to ruin your box — they're just doing their job. And a little foresight on your part can go a long way. Pack smart, declare clearly, and when in doubt, message our team. We'd rather double-check something before you send than fix a problem afterward.

The balikbayan box is a bridge between two homes. Let's make sure it gets across without any hiccups.
